Victoria Cross: First of three citations for Sergeant William McWheeney, 44th Regiment. On 20 October 1854 at Sebastopol, a party of sharpshooters were being repulsed from the Quarries, and a private from the 44th Regiment was dangerously wounded. Sergeant McWheeney took the wounded man on his back and carried him to a place of safety under very heavy fire. On 5 December he saved the life of a corporal, bringing him in under fire and digging a slight cover with his bayonet, where the two of them remained until dark. On 18 June 1855 Sergeant McWheeney volunteered for the advanced guard in the Cemetery and was never absent from duty during the war.

Victoria Cross: First of three citations for Captain William Peel RN of the Naval Brigade. 1854 at the Siege of Sevastopol, he picked up a live shell with the fuse still burning from amongst several powder cases and threw it over the parapet. The shell burst as it left his hands.

Victoria Cross: Private Thomas Grady, 4th Foot, volunteered to repair the embrasures of the Sailors' Battery on the Left Attack and carried out this task under very heavy fire from a line of batteries. On 22 November during the repulse of a Russian attack, although severely wounded, Private Grady refused to leave the front and his example encouraged the weak force which was engaging the enemy to maintain their position.

Victoria Cross: First of three citations for Midshipman Edward St John Daniel of HMS Diamond, On 18 October 1854 at Sebastopol, Crimea, Midshipman Daniel was one of the volunteers from HMS Diamond, who, under the command of the captain (William Peel) brought in powder to the battery from a wagon under very heavy fire, a shot having disabled the horses.

Victoria Cross: 17 Oct 1854, Lieutenant Colonel Collingwood Dickson, Royal Artillery, at Sebastopol, when the batteries had run short of powder, displayed great coolness and contempt of danger in directing the unloading of several waggons of the field battery which were brought up to the trenches to supply the want. He personally helped to carry the powder-barrels under heavy fire from the enemy.
